1st Crusade
|
The first thought of a crusade came when Alexius I asked Pope Urban II in March of 1095 for help against the Turks. Pope Urban II responded favorably and hoped to bring an end to the Great Schism and bring together the Church. Eight months after Alexius’ request, Urban II gave a speech in France at the Council of Clermont. In his speech, he summoned all to answer the call of a “holy war that would cleanse it participants of sin.” (Asbridge 2) He spoke of benefits both of an earthly and heavenly nature. He said “remission of sins was offered to anyone who dies in the undertaking.” (“Crusade“ 1) For the rest of that year and part of 1096, Pope Urban II spread his message throughout France, Germany, and Italy.
