1. What has been Whistler’s traditional approach to manufacturing?
Ø Before 1985, both subassembly and final assembly were done in Whistler’s 40,000 square foot plant in Westford. In 1985, they rented out a new facility in Fitchburg, MA and moved final assembly operations.
Ø Subassembly production:
o Three internal major assemblies: a microwave subassembly, a radio frequency (RF), and a control subassembly
o The RF and control boards were assembled from electronic components and bare printed circuit boards purchased from outside vendors. The microwave subassembly was manufactured using zinc die castings that were also outsourced.
o The subassemblies were produced in batch sizes large enough to meet the requirements of one month
