The Napster controversy has been a proverbial “volcano”, waiting to erupt, since it was created in 1999. Recording artists, as well as the entire recording industry, feel that Napster has infringed on their financial and personal rights. In this paper, I will be discussing the ethics involved with Napster and the file sharing system. I will discuss both the Utilitarian and Deontological theories behind the file sharing system.
