Ethics, as I shall use the term, means moral standards applying to all members of a group simply because they are members of that group. "Standard" means a rule, principle, or ideal. Ethics differs from group to group. Police forces are government organizations charged with the responsibility of maintaining law and order. When most people think of police officers, the words "to serve and protect" likely come to mind. Ethic codes and guidelines protect professionals from themselves, as well as from those who, they perceive, abuse the power of their profession.
