Global warming is a major concern, and also one that is not being looked at from all angles. While there are many contributors to global warming, urbanization is a very prominent one. Many American cities are considered urban heat islands. A term which originated in Atlanta, Georgia about ten years ago when it was discovered that temperatures in cities were drastically higher than surrounding areas. There are many reasons for this disturbing repeating occurrence, but one of the main reasons is the abundance of dark surfaces in cities. Cities are filled with parking lots, rooftops, and roads, which are all, made of heat attracting dark colored materials. Many solutions exist to minimize the heat created by cities.
