When the settlers decided they wanted the lands east of the Mississippi River belonging to the Native Americans, also known as Indians, the United States Government did everything in its power to assist these pioneers acquire Native American land. The United States committed atrocities such as passing legislature requiring the Native Americans to give up their land, and massacring whole villages of Native Americans who refused to relocate. Aided by his bias against the Native Americans, General Jackson set the Native American removal into effect in the war of 1812 when he battled the great Tecumseh and conquered him. Without the vehement drive of Andrew Jackson to eradicate Native Americans as far west of the Mississippi River as possible,
