1. How does the narrator justify keeping Bartleby employed after he refuses to do any work?
The lawyer, the narrator, knows that Bartleby should be fired. Before Bartleby arrived, the lawyer appeared to be living so comfortably that nothing was interesting. This refusal that Bartleby continues is what puzzles the lawyer. The narrator thinks that it would be too much trouble to fire him. In time though he goes through changes and starts understanding Bartleby a little bit more. The narrator basically thinks that even if he fires Bartleby, the mysterious question is still left unanswered to why the refusals are so commonly reoccurring.
