The Hepatitis B virus (HBV) is one of the many major diseases of mankind and is a serious public health problem. It is estimated that there are 128,000 new Hepatitis B infections every year. (Encarta Encyclopedia 99, Microsoft Corporation) Hepatitis means inflammation of the liver. The disease can be spread many different ways but there are ways to prevent the virus from getting into a person’s bloodstream. Treatment has not yet been found for this virus but there is a vaccine.
There are many ways for the virus to be spread. If a mother has this virus while she is pregnant, it could be dangerous to the baby after birth. Studies show that a baby has a 90-95 percent chance of contracting the HBV during child birth. (Encarta Encyclopedia 99
