Thailand (previously know as Siam) has been populated ever since the dawn of civilization in Asia. Thailand means “land of the free”, and throughout its 800-year history, Thailand can boast the distinction of being the only country in Southeast Asia never to have been colonized. There are a few conflicting opinions as to the origins of the Thais. One opinion feels that about 4,500 years ago the Thais originated in northwestern Szechuan in China and later migrated down to Thailand along the southern part of China. They then split into two main groups. One settled down in the North and became the kingdom of “Lan Na” and the other one is in further south, which afterward was defeated by the Khmers and became the kingdom of “Sukhothai”. T
