Division of American Labor in Robert B. Reich’s Perspective

American labor today can be seen in three categories. In Robert B. Reich’s essay, "Why the Rich are Getting Richer and the Poor, Poorer" he illustrates how people are categorized into three "boats" in American society. Reich feels that each boat specifies a group of people. He classifies people as the routine producers, which are on the boat that is sinking quickly, the boat that is sinking slowly consists of the in-person servers, and the last boat that keeps rising has the symbolic analysts on board. Reich accurately depicts the placement of people in the labor categories according to their occupation and function in society.
