The DSM-IV (2000) stated that “Somatization Disorder (historically referred to as hysteria or Briquet’s syndrome) is a polysymptomatic disorder that begins before age 30 years, extends over a period of years, and is characterized by a combination of pain, gastrointestinal, sexual, and pseudoneurological symptoms” (p. 445). Somatization disorder is one of the seven somatoform disorders, the others being Undifferentiated, Conversion, Pain, Hypochondriasis, Body Dysmorphic, and Somatofom Disorder Not Otherwise Specified. Excluding medical conditions or substance-induced etiology contributes to the individual grouping of these disorders.
