Uncle Tom
|
I chose to read Uncle Tom’s Cabin because it is a novel that many people loved and revered, but at the same time many other people hated it. I knew that I would be able to find a lot of information on it and get some good discussion for this paper. Also, after reading the book Adventures of Huckleberry Finn and reviewing Jane Smiley’s essay “Say It Ain’t So, Huck: Second Thoughts on Mark Twain’s Masterpiece”, where Smiley praises Uncle Tom’s Cabin as a true depiction of slavery in the South; I thought it would be nice to compare the two novels and see which one, in my opinion, was better. In terms of dealing with the issue of slavery, and showing how the lives of slaves truly were, I would have to say Uncle Tom’s Cabin does the job.
