Why should the philosopher return to the cave?

When you imagine a cave, what comes thoughts spin through your mind? I know that when I think of caves, I think of the dangers lurking in the shadows and in the depths of which I cannot see. I think of caves as a home for unforeseen dangers, but in contrast, I also think of the cave as a refuge from a violent storm. The outside world is analogous to a raging, violent storm. If the philosopher were to return to the safety of the cave, he also would return to the numerous hidden dangers within the cave.
