Freedom is an abstract concept that is elusive in nature. Freedom has often been defined by scholastic philosophy as having two distinctions, one being “freedom from” and the other “freedom to”. The former describes an ideal in which freedom is defined in terms of being delivered from restraint, duty, and expectation. The latter is a state of being in which one is free to lead an altruistic life. In “The Story of the Hour” Kate Chopin tells a story of a beautiful young woman, Louise Mallard, who is searching for “freedom from” oppression not “freedom to” love.
