A few of the criticisms relating to the PSI report includes: Judges' extensive reliance on the PSI for sentencing. In many jurisdictions probation officers are overburdened with presentence investigations and do not have time to conduct an adequate investigation and prepare a potentially useful report. PSI reports conducted by probation departments are habitual and biased against the defendant.
Opponents dispute the over-reliance sentencing judges place on the PSI report, claiming the sentencing decision is shifted from the court to the probation officer.
