Mariano Azuela was born January 1, 1873 in Lagos de Moreno, Jalisco, Mexico and died in Mexico City of a heart attack on March 1, 1952 at the age of 79. Born into the middle class of Mexico, he was the product of Don Porfirios world (Mariano Azuela, Luis Leal, p. 457), Don Porfirio being; Porfirio Diaz, the dictator which ruled Mexico with an iron fist for more than thirty years between 1876 and 1911. His parents Evaristo Azuela and Paulina Gonzalez Azuela owned a small grocery store and ranch. It was on this ranch in Lagos de Moreno, that Mariano Azuela was raised.
