Importance of Sleep in Siddhartha

In Herman Hesse’s work Siddhartha, the main character (also the title of the book) sets out to experience the world and find the Atman within. Taking place in India, Siddhartha goes through many different experiences: He is a Brahmin, an ascetic, a merchant, and a ferryman. But all of these different experiences are interconnected by sleep in some way that may not be initially apparent. The book shows that sleep is important because of how it ties all of his experiences together and gives Siddhartha closure as he explores the inner being.
