Throughout Europe, conflicts had been arising and intensifying; it was only a matter of time before these individual struggles combined to spark conflict on a much larger scale. The Holy Roman Emperor instigating a religious and political shake-up and France’s ongoing fear of being surrounded by its enemies were key factors in each power’s entry into the Thirty Years’ War; the most important factors were the Holy Roman Empire’s repression of Protestants in the German states and Spain’s struggle to retake its territory in the Netherlands.
