I think that in “The Story of an Hour" by Kate Chopin, the character of Louise Mallard had no one to blame but herself for her death, because her selfishness kept her from experiencing the love that would have healed her heart trouble.
The first clue that told me Louise’s selfishness was affecting her heart was when she says over and over again under her breath to herself, “free, free, free!” (14). She said that because when she was notified of her husband’s death, she thought she was going to be free. She wanted to be alone, with no one to care for her, but herself. She acted as if she did not know what love was half of the time they were together. “She loved him sometimes but she often did not” (14). How can she be married and only love
