They were removed from there homeland in West Africa by the Spaniards to be enlisted into slavery, but Cinque, which is the main character had other plans for their future. He led a rebellion on the ship that ended in bloodshed. After an attempt to sail back to West Africa from Havana, they were captured and taken to America, were they would stand trial.
