With over 700 different versions, the earliest dating back to the ninth century, Cinderella is probably the oldest and most universal of all fairy tales (Ch’eng-Shih, Tuan’,548). Although Cinderella’s character has changed and developed as it has passed through different societies and cultures, almost every country has their own version of the story. So with so many versions in so many different cultures, what exactly makes a Cinderella story a Cinderella story? I would like to take a look at three different versions of the story to explore the similarities and differences of the story when put in different cultures.
