Angelina Weld Grimke was born in Boston, Massachusetts to Archibald Henry (lawyer, diplomat, writer/publisher) and Sarah Eliza (writer). Angelina was raised by her father. Sarah left Archibald because of the tension that mounted after the marriage of Sarah and Archibald from her parents due to the fact that Archibald was of mixed descent (Sarah was white). After leaving Angelina in Archibald’s custody, Sarah never saw her daughter again. Grimke attended many fine private institutions in New England as well as Carleton Academy in Minnesota.
