The emergence of Romanticism in the late 18th and early 19th century, was much more than just a revolt against the prescribed rules of classicism. Its widespread influence and staying power had not been compared to any other intellectual/artistic movement since the end of the Middle Ages. This is evident when we look at the many influences the Romantic period has had on the way of life over two centuries later – today. The main way in which I believe that life today is indebted to ideas, values and attitudes associated with those of the Romantic period is the element of self-consciousness. Above all, this includes the development of the importance of individualism, emotion, freedom of expression – simply the reclamation of human freedom
