Les Demoiselles d'Avignon is one of the most important works in the genesis of modern art. The painting depicts five naked prostitutes in a brothel; two of them push aside curtains around the space where the other women strike seductive. The five figures and the space around them is purposely distorted and the faces of the two women on the right have been completely rearranged possibly a reflection of Picasso's fascination with African masks. In this painting, Picasso made a self-conscious attempt to break free of traditional representational ideas. Les Demoiselles d'Avignon marks a radical break from traditional composition and perspective.
