The overwhelming majority of the world’s scientists agree that the Earth’s climate is warming at
an unprecedented rate and that over the next century this global warming will be one of the
biggest problems facing the environment, economy, and human health. This rise in temperatures
is attributed to the significant increase in greenhouse gas emissions, mainly from the burning of
fossil fuels in the transportation and energy sectors.
According to the United Nation’s Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change, temperatures
during the last century rose an average of 1 o F, the fastest temperature increase in the last 1,000
years. Scientists predict that over the next century, global temperatures will rise by another 2.9-
