The following report provides a brief outline of important costs and benefits that need consideration in the decision of whether to implement pro-growth policies in Islandia.
Firstly I want to point out that the Environmental Kuznets Curve (EKC) has limitations and is only a guideline to the expected impacts of economic growth on the environment. Yandle, Bhattarai and Vijayaraghavan (2004:29) discuss many EKC studies and found that ‘there is no single relationship that fits all pollutants for all places and times’. Some studies produced no relationship or steady lines rather than the inverted U shape of the EKC. Studies that did produce an EKC often had differing turning points.
