Tartuffe was first performed in private for King Louis XIV of France in 1664. The play pleased the king but it was banned from the public because it was thought to be a strong attack on the Catholic Church. Moliere protested and rewrote the play, once again it was banned. After Moliere's third protest in 1669 the play was finally performed for the public.
Tartuffe is a comedy. It deals with its themes and subject matter through knowledge and emotions. After establishing that the genre is a comedy, it must further be shown what type of comedy it is.
