Kmart's corporate structure Kmart History: Sabastian S. Kresge founded the first “five and dime” store in 1899. As time passed S.S. Kresge saw the need for a general merchandising store that could handle multiple product lines. His idea translated into the first Kmart, which would be located in Detroit in 1962; followed by 16 diverse locations throughout the year.1 By 1976 Kmart had reached a total of 1,206 stores while the Kresge “five and dime” numbered 446.
