NOT THEY WHO SOAR I want to introduce you to Paul L. Dunbar’s poem titled, “Not They Who Soar.” The poem was first published in 1895. Paul Dunbar was the first African American to gain a reputation as a poet. Paul Lawrence Dunbar was the first important African American Poet in American Literature and the first poet to write to both a black and white audience. Dunbar was born in Dayton, Ohio on June 27, 1872, to Joshua and Matilda Murphy Dunbar, both natives of Kentucky.
