The digestive system is made up of organs for changing food chemically so that body tissues can absorb it. These organs are the mouth, pharynx, oesophagus, stomach, liver, pancreas and gallbladder, small intestine, large intestine and anus. Digestion involves breaking organic compounds into simple soluble substances absorbable by tissues. This process involves catalytic reactions between ingested food and enzymes secreted into the intestinal tract. The pushing of food through the digestive system is called peristalsis. During peristalsis the digestive system undergoes many chemical breakdowns and reactions according to the food that eaten.
