In Keywords (1976) Raymond Williams points out that the act of using up goods, the process of consumption itself, often occurs through active, sometimes even creative social practices. Celia Lury describes consumption as a dual process; for her it is “both a moment of consumption and production, of destruction and construction” (1996, pg 1). For example, an audience watching a film “uses up” the text in the sense that they have witnessed it shot by shot from beginning to end. However to make sense of the film the audience must engage in an act of reading it so as actively to produce meaning from the text.
