Postpartum Mood Disorders
Postpartum mood disorders are a condition affecting nearly 80 percent of all new mothers. This form of depression ranges in severity from the mild postpartum blues, a.k.a. “baby blues”, to the most severe form known as postpartum psychosis. Key clues for postpartum mood disorders vary from restlessness and irritability, to delusions and auditory hallucinations. While the cause of post-partum mood disorders is still unclear, many researchers agree that biological, psychological, and social factors all play a role in determining whether or not a woman will become depressed after childbirth. Treatment of postpartum mood disorders is specific to each individual woman, according to the severity of her symptoms.
