THE BALD EAGLE (Haliaeetus leucocephalus)
The bald eagle is the national bird of the United States of America, and one of the only eagles that is unique to North America. Its scientific name of Haliaeetus leucocephalus means a sea (halo) eagle (aeetus) with a white (leukos) head (cephalus). When European settlers first came to America, experts estimate that the bald eagle may have numbered over half a million. They existed up and down both the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans on the East and West Coast of America. Yet, the bald eagle population began to diminish fast due to the use of the pesticide DDT, habitat destruction, as well as pollution (ABE web page 2004). Thus, the Bald Eagle Act was passed in 1940.
