A Catholic Mary
Raised as a Minnesota Lutheran, I was never all that impressed with the Virgin Mary. The only time I remember hearing about her was on Christmas Eve, along with the shepherds and the wise men. Her name also came up in the Apostles’ Creed (“born of the Virgin Mary”) that I was forced to learn in confirmation and confessed in church on Sunday. She never seemed like someone to have an opinion about; she was just there, Jesus’ kindly mother.
As I got older I became aware of a more serious side to her, especially the fact that it was not such an easy thing to be chosen as the mother of God’s Son. One could see it in her face when she appeared in pictures of Bible stories for Sunday school, especially if she was shown at
