Overview
This case involves AIDS in the workplace in the mid 1980s. Paul Cronan, an employee of New England Telephone (NET), was diagnosed with AIDS and placed on medical leave. Cronan alleged discrimination by NET based on his illness and filed a lawsuit against the company. NET settled and agreed to provide Paul another position within their workforce. Upon Paul’s return to work, twenty-nine of his thirty-nine coworkers walked off their jobs in protest of unsafe working conditions. The following analysis will examine the circumstances prior to the protest and the ethical issues NET faced in dealing with Paul’s illness within their workforce.
