When looking at feminist literature of ancient Greek philosophers there seems to be a
recurring question. That question is, “Was Plato a feminist?”. According to The Dictionary
of Feminist Theory a feminist is “both a doctrine of equal rights for women and an ideology
of social transformation aiming to create for women beyond simple society equality”. At the very
least a feminist is someone who believes in treating women and men as equals. A feminist
believes that society from which Plato was writing, even thinking of women as equal to men
would have been radical at that time.
