The Drivers of New Organizational Structures
There are many individual forces that are driving the move towards new organizational structures, but it is their interaction that makes out current era one of transition and uncertainty. The basics of organization design must shift from an institutional focus to a customer focus. This is very new. If you look in the indexes of the books that have influenced business thought and practice the most over the past eighty years, you will find very few references to "customers." Table 1 shows representative examples from an ongoing study being conducted by Keen Innovations.
