OSI Model: Managing Communication
Overview
While complex, computer networks are often highly structured. Most networks are structured as an organized series of layers, each one built upon its predecessor, reducing their complexity. The OSI Reference Model is based on a proposal developed by the International Organization for Standardization (ISO) and called ISO OSI (Open Systems Interconnection) Reference Model because it deals with connecting “open systems”—systems that are open for communication with other systems. The ISO OSI Reference Model, usually shortened to just “The OSI Model” aids communication between a client and a server.
