Gloria Estefan was born in Havana, Cuba on September 1, 1957. Her father’s name was Jose Manuel Fajardo, and he was a soldier. His duty was to protect President Fulgencio Batista and his family. When the communist dictator Fidel Castro gained control of Cuba in 1959, Jose took his family and fled to the United States. The Fajardo family settled in a ghetto behind the Orange Bowl in Miami, Florida. Soon after, Jose was imprisoned for eighteen months because he was involved in the Bay of Pigs Invasion of 1961. The invasion was an attempt by 1500 Cuban exiles to invade Cuba and overthrow Fidel Castro, but the invasion was a failure.
Jose returned home to the United States when Gloria was seven years old. He immediately joined the army
