Keith, Harold (1987) Rifles for Watie. The setting of this story is in Kansas and the Southern states of the United States. Rifles for Watie is a story about Jefferson Davis Bussey, a sixteen year old boy, who must fight in the Civil War to protect his family and all they have worked hard to build from the bushwhackers who terrorize the families in Kansas. Jeff tells of his hardships with his commanding officer. He also tells of his journey behind enemy lines as a scout.
The story starts out with Jeff working on his family farm when all of the sudden bushwhackers ride to his house. They are threatening Mr. Bussey because he refuses to feed Confederate citizens. Jeff comes in and defends his family against armed bushwalkers and chase
