Gods in Ancient Greece
At the time Oedipus The King was written, Greeks held a certain attitude towards the gods. The gods were seen to be cruel, manipulative and “playful”. Oedipus The King Sophocles confirms the Greeks attitudes, though it does not directly state them.
Ancient Greek citizens felt that the gods would do as they pleased, and that the fate the gods have set up cannot be changed. If a mortal attempted to defy a god, that person would be setting themselves up for a world of trouble. The gods toyed with people as if life was a giant game of chess.
