There has been an ongoing debate on whether or not Iceland should join the EU (European Union). The majority of the residents in Iceland advocate membership. All political parties are either opposed to the membership, or else have not said otherwise in public. Very few politicians have claimed that they support membership. Iceland is currently members of the EEA (European Economic Area) along with Lichtenstein and Norway. Iceland is very reliant on their fishing industry as their main export (see attached chart). This is an important aspect of the debate because Iceland would lose control of their waters under the Common Fisheries Act if they were to join the EU.
