James Baldwin was born in a Harlem Hospital on August 2, 1924. His mother, Emma Berdis Jones, was unmarried when she gave birth to James and he never knew his biological father. A few years later his mother married David Baldwin who was a factory worker and preacher. Over the next fifteen years Emma and David had eight children. James had the responsibility of raising Civil Rights Movement his siblings since his father worked long hours. From an early age James showed an exquisite interest in literature and writing. He enjoyed reading and this helped to contribute to his aspirations of becoming a writer. However, his parents did not approve of his interest in literature, they wanted him to pursue a career as a preacher like his stepfather.
