Obesity is the second leading cause of preventable deaths in the United States. In 2000, a study released involving obesity, states that the lack of physical activity and a poor diet directly caused 400,000 deaths. The number of cases involving obesity has doubled since 1990 and is rapidly gaining on tobacco (435,000 deaths), as the nations number one preventable killer. (Sherman A1 A12).
