The Glass Menagerie by Tennessee Williams is a play about the Winfield’s and their struggle to survive The Great Depression. Abandoned by their father and husband, Amanda, Tom, and Laura are forced to make it on their own. Tom, being the only son, has taken over his father’s role as provider—i.e. the man of the house. Amanda is the mother and head of the household. Though she may not be the breadwinner her children must still obey her nonetheless. Laura is the daughter and unlike her mother, extremely shy. She dropped out of high school and Business College because of her shyness and her “deformity”—a childhood illness caused one of her legs to be slightly shorter than the other.
