Marianne Moore’s “The Fish” uses the actual structure of the poem to help illustrate the life and
movements of “The Fish”. Although the type of fish is not stated, I believe that this particular
“fish” is a large fish, such as a whale. “The Fish”, which has “external marks of abuse”, is covered
with “crow-blue mussel-shells” and “barnacles which encrusts the side”. As “The Fish” travels
through the “turquoise sea of bodies”, this journey is reflected in the structure of the poem. The
