Nadine Gordimer's 'Once Upon a Time' is definitely a literary story. The author is attempting to show us an exaggerated interpretation of the morals and worries of an upper class white family during a time of segregation. The story never states that they are white, but the author has led us to believe it. It really doesn't make much difference which side was white or black, it works either way...if our fear of what we don't understand, or don't want to know is what drives us, then that will be our ultimate demise. It is literary because the author is portraying a view of life, one that is consistent with segregation and shallow racist ideas, not facts.
