Fyodor Dostoevsky asserts in “Notes From the Underground” that humankind is ruled by desire. No matter how scientific and rational a society becomes, humankind will always behave according to our individual desires, even when our desires are in conflict with what is advantageous to us. The Underground Man, the anonymous character who authors this work, writes:
“…man, always and everywhere, whoever he is, has preferred to act as he wished, and not at all as reason and advantage have dictated; one might even desire something opposed to one’s own advantage, and sometimes (this is my idea) one positively must do so.” (2376)
The Underground Man believes this character of human nature is what keeps humankind from achieving peaceful, utopia
