The moral economy and mercantile capitalism are almost opposites in their philosophy. Mercantile capitalism is based on the individual and his or her desires whereas the moral economy was based on the needs of the community. Both systems, however ultimately serve the same end. They are designed to empower the few rich. In the North American colonies, conflicts arose between these two systems. It seem that landowners wanted to preserve the privileges of the moral economy but with the moral responsibility of a capitalist.
