1.1 Background
The tourism industry’s rapid growth has been one of the success stories of the post-war world. Its International arrivals across the world have grown over 20 fold in the last fifty years. It has been experiencing a booming period. The World Tourism Organization (WTO) estimates that there were more than 595 million international travelers in 1997. Spending by these tourists was estimated at more than US$425 billion. Tourist arrivals are predicted to grow by an average 4.3% a year over the next two decades, while receipts from international tourism will climb by 6.7% a year. Now, more and more countries are competing for a share of the “tourism cake”.
